I did the event last year and the team who I ran for (they are not running this year) had an order of the difficulty of legs.
Does anybody have such a list they can post?
cheers

Interesting question. I have done nearly all the legs in training or in the event and my list in descending order of difficulty would be 17, 2, 11, 8, 4, 2, 1, 5, 15, 9, 7, 12, 18, 6, 14, 16, 10 and 3, but it's obviously a matter of opinion!

This is a really interesting topic, and good to see your response. A couple of comments - you have leg 2 in the list twice, but no leg 13. The other question is, assuming this ranking list applies to odd years, what would be the ranking for the "inland route" years for legs 1 and 2 ? The conversations will run and run, as we runners all have our preferences for different terrain and types of hills.

Yep, sorry I meant to put leg 13 second in the list.
As for the inland route, I would put leg 1 towards the end as it fairly short and flat. Leg 2 however is much tougher with a significant hill out of Jevington as well as the toughie out of Alfriston and is comparable with the coastal leg 2.
I would also add that the original leg 15 would be higher up the list as it is usually 1.5 miles longer and includes the hill up through QE2 Park that was added to leg 14 this year.

Here's my two penneth: Firstly, one Brighton club's take on the legs: 1 easy, 2 hard, 3 easy, 4 hard, 5 hard, 6 steady, 7 steady, 8 hard, 9 steady, 10 easy, 11 hard, 12 steady, 13 hard, 14 easy, 15 steady, 16 easy, 17 hard and 18 easy. Secondly, also from a Brighton club perspective (L=long, E=easy & H=hard): Leg 1 L&H (odd year), Leg 2 H (odd year), Leg 3 E, Leg 4 L&H, Leg 5, Leg 6, Leg 7, Leg 8 L&H, Leg 9, Leg 10 E, Leg 11, Leg 12, Leg 13 L&H, Leg 14 E, Leg 15 H, Leg 16, Leg 17 L&H, Leg 18 E. Thirdly, here is the url for the ascent profiles of legs 3-18 (if anybody has them for legs 1 and 2 that would be great: www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=5&sqi=2&ved=0CC8QFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fittleworthflyers.org.uk%2Fflyers%2Fdocuments%2Fsouthdownswayrelay2008%2FProfiles.pdf&rct=j&q=south%20downs%20way%20relay%20leg%201%20jevington&ei=0HnwTZfsJIrMhAeIse0l&usg=AFQjCNFiCzJu7f45E8kX12sV02tdkoX9Pg&cad=rjaI would also add that when the leg is done should be factored in (both in terms of when in the day and how close to another leg...don't do legs 4, 8 and 11!), as should runner's preferences (are they a great climber or a reckless descender). Cheers – Raymond

I have just plotted all of the legs for even years on the 'Measure Route' facility on Fetcheveryone as I too was interested to know which legs are 'officially' the most difficult.
I'm not saying that I totally agree with this order, but according to the Hill Score (Rating of ascent vs descent with distance also taken into account) feature, Fetcheveryone makes Leg 13 the hardest, followed by 2, 11, 4, 8, 5, 17, 12, 15, 14, 7, 9, 6, 18, 16, 1, 3 and 10. I'll be happy to run legs 3, 10 and 16 this year I think!!!
As you say, there are a number of factors to take into account, like the runner's preferences and even number of and ease of negotiating the gates on each leg! I suppose at the end of the day though, all legs are as tough as you are willing to make them (in terms of effort).

Do you have a link for your maps. Also - trying to work out where leg 1 actually goes this year. (The SDW doesn't actually pass that way unless you use the path and new bridleway). Great I'm down for leg 13 again.

The measurement for Leg 18 seems to have gone a bit awry!

So it was, I must have got a little over-excited during plotting!
It should be correct now though, as should Leg 17 that I noticed an error on too.
